Medical education is one of the most sought-after professions in the world. In order to become a doctor, one must complete their MBBS degree from a recognized institution. Many students opt to study MBBS abroad due to a variety of reasons, such as the lack of seats in their home country or the desire to experience a different culture. Two popular destinations for Indian students are the Philippines and India. In this blog, we will discuss the differences between the MBBS curriculum in India and the Philippines.
Duration of the Course:
The MBBS course duration in India is 5.5 years, which includes a year of compulsory internship. On the other hand, the MBBS course duration in the Philippines is 5 years, which also includes a year of clinical internship. The academic curriculum of both countries is almost similar.
Admission Procedure:
In India, admission to medical colleges is done through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The eligibility criteria for NEET include a minimum of 50% marks in the 12th standard examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as the main subjects. In the Philippines, admission to medical colleges is done through the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT). The eligibility criteria for NMAT include a minimum of 60% marks in the 12th standard examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as the main subjects.
Course Structure:
The course structure of MBBS in India and the Philippines is almost similar. Both countries follow a similar curriculum that includes pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects. However, the Philippines medical colleges have a more practical approach towards learning, which includes case-based learning and problem-based learning. In India, medical education is more theoretical, and students rely on textbooks and lectures for learning.
Cost of Education:
The cost of education in the Philippines is comparatively lower than in India. In India, private medical colleges charge exorbitant fees, making it difficult for students from economically weaker sections to pursue their dream of becoming a doctor. In the Philippines, the cost of education is much lower, making it a more affordable option for Indian students.
Language Barrier:
In the Philippines, English is the medium of instruction in medical colleges, making it easier for Indian students to understand and communicate. On the other hand, in India, the medium of instruction is primarily Hindi or the regional language, making it challenging for students from other parts of the country to understand and communicate.
Recognition:
Indian medical degrees are recognized globally, making it easier for Indian doctors to pursue their career abroad. The Medical Council of India (MCI) regulates medical education in India, and the degrees awarded by Indian medical colleges are recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international medical councils. On the other hand, the Philippines medical degrees are recognized only in a few countries.

In India, due to the limited availability of resources, students do not get enough exposure to real-life cases, making it difficult for them to handle patients after graduation.
